On October 15, 2014, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) sacked Stephen Keshi, the head coach of the national football team, the Super Eagles.
The Nigerian football governing body made the decision at a meeting of its executive committee held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. Keshi was replaced by Shaibu Amodu, a former coach of the team, and he was assisted by Salisu Yusuf, Gbenga Ogunbote, and Aloysius Agu.
Keshi's three-year contract with the NFF officially ended after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he guided the Super Eagles to the tournament's second round following their victory in the Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the team's recent poor performances in the Group A qualifiers, including losses to Sudan and Congo, and a draw with South Africa, appeared to have influenced the NFF's decision. Although the Super Eagles managed a 3-1 victory against Sudan, it was not enough to secure Keshi a new contract. Additionally, Keshi had earlier boasted that several African countries were waiting to hire him.
