Twitter Founder Backs #EndSARS Protest
On October 14, 2020, Jack Dorsey- former owner of Twitter, (now X) and payments company, Square, threw his support behind the #EndSARS protest that took place in Nigeria.
Dorsey took to his Twitter handle to ask for support for Nigerian protesters demanding an end to police brutality, extortions, and extrajudicial killings. He tweeted, "Donate via Bitcoin to help #EndSARS," while also retweeting a post from the Feminist Coalition informing people of the modes by which contributions can be made. His tweet also has the Nigerian national flag in it.
After he shared the tweet backing #EndSARS protest, some pro-government officials were angry and started sending warning and threat messages but he did not change his stance. The #EndSARS protest received huge financial support from donations via cryptocurrency platforms from individuals within and outside Nigeria, prompting the oppressive government to ban crypto operations in addition to restricting Twitter in the country until after some time.
