Super Eagles striker Ademola Lookman has criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for not implementing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, according to OwnGoalNigeria. Lookman voiced his frustration after two of his legitimate goals were disallowed due to what he believes were human errors.
The Atalanta forward expressed his anger following Nigeria's 1-0 win over Libya, during which his goal was ruled offside, though replays suggested he was onside. This incident came on the heels of a similar situation in a previous match against Benin Republic, where another one of his goals was controversially disallowed.
"Two times now I have been denied a good goal. Why no use of VAR in key games like this?" Lookman questioned, highlighting his frustration with the lack of technology in these important matches.
CAF has a selective VAR policy, using it only in certain stages of AFCON, club tournaments, and World Cup qualifier playoffs, which has caused widespread dissatisfaction. Lookman's recent experiences emphasize the need for VAR to be implemented in all major competitions to avoid such costly refereeing errors.
