Peres Resigns
Also, on this day in 1986, then Israeli Prime Minister, Shimon Peres resigned from office. Peres, who served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1986 as part of a power-sharing arrangement with Yitzhak Shamir, stepped down in accordance with the coalition agreement between their respective parties, the Labour Party and Likud.
This arrangement was designed to stabilise the government during a period of economic challenges and regional tensions. Peres's resignation allowed Shamir to become the Prime Minister, which ensured continuity of the rotation of leadership between the two political parties.
