Senator representing Edo North and former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has declared that Governor Godwin Obaseki is politically dead following the outcome of the September 21 governorship election.
The election saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, emerge victorious, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
During an appearance on Channels Television's 'Politics Today,' Oshiomhole remarked that Obaseki's political career is effectively over after the defeat of his chosen candidate, Asue Ighodalo, in the election.
Oshiomhole criticized Obaseki's visit to the INEC office during the collation of results, suggesting it was an attempt to influence the outcome.
"How can a sitting governor go to a collation centre? To intimidate or possibly influence the results or to change the results? What was he doing there? How can a governor go to a collation centre when collation is going on?" he questioned.
Obaseki, however, had stated that his visit to INEC was to inquire why collation had not yet begun.
The former governor went on to commend the people of Edo for voting out the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and condemned Obaseki's previous comments describing the election as a "do-or-die affair."
"Obaseki said the election was a do-or-die affair. He told you that here. He insisted. Now, the people have done it, he's dead.
"Now the people have done it, I guess he's politically dead. I know so. The verdict is out," Oshiomhole stated.
INEC confirmed that APC's Monday Okpebholo secured victory with 291,667 votes, solidifying the party's win in Edo.
