The tragic death of Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo has been attributed to a viral infection.

Pulse Sports reported that Izquierdo collapsed on the pitch during a Copa Libertadores match last month and was subsequently taken to the hospital.

His mother, Sandra Viana, revealed that doctors had diagnosed a viral infection that lodged in his heart. The combination of the virus and the physical demands of the match led to a cardiac arrhythmia, which ultimately caused his death.

Viana expressed her gratitude to both Nacional and Sao Paulo for their support and compassion following the tragedy. She also shared the heartbreaking task of informing Izquierdo's two-year-old daughter of her father's passing.

"We wanted to know what caused the arrhythmia because Juan had never had heart problems," she told Sport890.

"The doctors studied the case and told us that he had caught a virus. He had only complained of having swollen lymph nodes. The doctors told us that the virus had lodged in his heart, and that the impact of the match and the high pace had caused the arrhythmia.

"That's what the cardiologists and neurologists told me."

Izquierdo's death has sent shockwaves through the football community, with many players and teams offering their condolences. Neymar, Rodrygo, and Roberto Firmino were among those who paid tribute to the young footballer.
