Man Utd vs Liverpool: Slot aims to write his name in history book

The stage is set for two old rivals, Manchester United and Liverpool, to clash in the Premier League Northwest Derby on Sunday evening at Old Trafford.

Man United head to the game following a 2-1 defeat to Brighton in their last game and a 1-0 against Fulham in their first Premier League game of the new campaign.

The Red Devils have plenty of new players, including Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte.

Man United manager Erik ten Hag had already confirmed in his pre+match press conference that the likes of Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund will not take part of the clash against Liverpool due to injury.

That means, the pair have have joined the likes of Leny Yoro (foot), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Luke Shaw (calf) and Victor Lindelof (toe) on the injury list.

Ten Hag's side faced Liverpool three times last season under their former manager Jurgen Klopp, drawing 0-0 at Anfield and 2-2 at Old Trafford in the Premier League, but won 4-3 in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have a new manager Arne Slot who took over from Klopp following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

Slot has got off to a very comfortable start to life at Anfield as he won his first two Premier League games against Ipswich Town and Brentford.

The 45-year-old Dutchman has a full squad to face Ten Hag's side apart from Curtis Jones, who is a doubt for the encounter due to a groin injury and new signing Federico Chiesa, who just joined the Anfield club on Thursday.

However, a win at Old Trafford today would give Slot a statement win because it is his first game against Man United since becoming Liverpool head coach.

None of Liverpool's last nine managers have won their first league meeting against Man United since Bob Paisley beat them 3-1 in November 1975.

Meanwhile, George Kay is the only Liverpool manager to win his first away league match against Man United in November1936, winning 5-2 at Old Trafford.

Can Slot write his name in the history book by beating Man United in their own backyard just like Paisley and Kay did?

The kick-off time for the match is 4 pm, Nigerian time.
