A three-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by a 48-year-old man in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India.
The minor was sleeping with her mother on a footpath outside a temple when the suspect abducted her on Saturday, August 17, 2024. She was found on Sunday morning with injury and bite marks on her body. Her medical examination confirmed rape.
The accused, Harish Sindhi, was arrested on Sunday. Sindhi, who works at a tea stall in the city, was drunk when he committed the crime, police said. His wife and son do not live with him.
The child was spotted lying wrapped in a red 'odhani' (stole) around 6.30am Sunday by a woman who was setting up her shop outside the temple.
ACP Anil Kumar said CCTV footage showed the accused taking away the girl around 2am, while she was sleeping with her parents outside the temple.
The girl's family is from Madhya Pradesh and resides in a slum here, said DCP (west) Rajesh Kumar Yadav.
Her mother is mentally ill and sits outside the temple with her five-year-old son.
Condemning the incident, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot said, "The rape of a three-year-old girl in Jodhpur is deeply disturbing. This crime has caused outrage among the public. Such incidents are creating an atmosphere of fear among the people of Rajasthan. This is an example of criminals becoming fearless due to the diminishing authority of govt and police."
"Incidents of shootings in broad daylight, robberies, murders and rapes are increasing in Jodhpur and the law and order situation has deteriorated. I have repeatedly urged Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to take immediate necessary steps to prevent crime in the state," he said.
