South Africa and Morocco have been listed among the top countries in the world that use ChatGPT the most, reflecting the growing interest in AI technology across Africa.
Nearly two years have passed since OpenAI released ChatGPT, helping kickstart the generative AI revolution. According to the Boston Consulting Group's CCI Global Consumer Sentiment Survey 2023, consumer awareness of AI is higher than expected.
In Morocco and South Africa, 80% of consumers have heard of ChatGPT. Of those surveyed, 38% in Morocco and 31% in South Africa actively use the AI-driven tool.
An earlier report by the IMF ranked both countries among the top 10 in Africa most prepared for AI adoption. South Africa, for instance, scored 0.49 on the AI preparedness index, placing it 3rd in Africa, while Morocco scored 0.42 and ranked 7th in the world.
Globally, 75% of respondents to BCG's survey have used ChatGPT or another AI-driven service. This number is surprisingly higher in markets such as India, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates, where AI usage is leapfrogging the levels seen in so-called mature markets.
India has the highest share (45%) of people using ChatGPT. This could be partly due to the country's large number of IT jobs, in which ChatGPT could be a valuable asset.
Consumers see the value the technology can bring, particularly to improve their daily lives, with 39% responding positively about AI's influence on this factor.
Excitement about AI in the workplace is high too: 60% see that AI will help with learning and education, and 55% anticipate workplace efficiencies.
Respondents also expressed some notable concerns about AI, with 33% worried about data security and the ethical implications of its use, and 30% concerned about AI potentially replacing workers in certain jobs. Similar to issues related to lifestyle, a significant portion of respondents reported mixed feelings about the role of AI in the workplace.
