According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have been given "the green light" to renew their interest in Brighton's Evan Ferguson this summer. This development follows David Ornstein's reports that Brighton have activated Georginio Rutter's £40 million release clause from Leeds United and are nearing his signing.
Brighton previously had offers of £29 million and £35 million for Ferguson rejected, but they now appear to be increasing their efforts, with The Athletic suggesting he is a target for a new signing.
Rutter has reportedly agreed to terms and is scheduled for a medical. Leeds acquired the French forward from Hoffenheim in January 2023 and are poised to make a significant profit on him.
For United to pursue Ferguson, they first need to address Financial Fair Play concerns. Ineos has already spent over £150 million this summer on Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Joshua Zirkzee. They are also looking for another midfielder to support Casemiro.
While Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Mason Greenwood have been sold, additional sales are necessary for United to afford another major acquisition, such as Ferguson.
The Daily Star has reported that United's renewed interest in the Republic of Ireland international is significant. Chelsea is also said to be considering a move for the highly-rated Ferguson, who has scored 16 goals and provided five assists in 65 appearances, along with three international goals.
Ferguson signed a contract extension until 2029 last summer. His current market value is listed at £42.85 million by Transfermarkt, but this figure may not reflect his actual transfer price.
