In Africa, the defence landscape has been evolving rapidly. Several countries on the continent are making significant strides in military defence, allocating substantial budgets and increasing their personnel to keep pace with global standards.

Among the various aspects of military power, fighter/interceptor fleet strength is important. Some countries on the continent are building impressive air forces, with fighter fleets that are not only growing in number but also in advanced capabilities.

According to a Global Firepower report, the fighter jet remains the frontline defender of any major power globally. The most advanced among these are the 5th Generation fighters, which represent the pinnacle of aviation technology. These fighters are equipped with stealth technology, highly advanced avionics, and superior manoeuvrability.

However, 4th and 4.5th-generation fighters, such as the American F-16 and the Russian Su-35, are still widely used and continue to form the backbone of many air forces around the world.

In addition to sheer numbers, the modern fighter/interceptor is characterized by its powerful radar systems and air-to-air missile capabilities. These advanced features allow a fighter jet to detect, track, and engage enemy aircraft with remarkable precision. The American F-22 Raptor, Russian Mikoyan MiG-29, Eurofighter Typhoon, and French Dassault Rafale are just a few examples of such highly capable fighters.

In Africa, countries such as Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco have made significant investments in their air forces.

According to the Global Firepower report, Egypt leads the continent with the largest fighter/interceptor aircraft fleet, boasting 238 units, which ranks 11th globally. Algeria follows with 201 aircraft, placing it 21st worldwide.

Below are the top 10 African countries with the highest fighter/interceptor fleet strength:
