Man Utd officially promote two academy starlets to first-team squad and they could save the club millions

Manchester United have promoted two of their academy youngsters to the first-team squad ahead of the new season.

Over the weekend, United were in action as they took on rivals Manchester City in the FA Community Sheild final at Wembley.

Despite leading into the closing stages, Bernardo Silva equalised for City and Pep Guardiola's men ended up winning on penalties.

With their Premier League campaign starting on Friday night against Fulham, United have promoted two of their youngsters to the first-team.

Full-back Harry Amass and forward Ethan Wheatley have both been listed as a first-team player on the club's official website.

With the summer transfer window edging closer to the end, United are set to add at least two more new players.

The Red Devils have already signed striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and defender Leny Yoro from Lille but are said to be closing in on a deal to bring in Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazaroui.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano wrote on social media: "Manchester United have planned for Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to undergo main part of medical tests at the club already today.

"Monday had to be and will be the day: landing, going to Carrington, medical tests and five-year contracts already prepared."

Speaking after the defeat against City at Wembley, United boss Erik ten Hag said: "You have to feel the pain. You have to get fuel from it to make it a successful season but also take the positives that we can bring, against a very good ball-playing team, press on the ball and we can, against a very good pressing team, outplay them.

"I was very pleased. After half an hour we were very competitive and we came in the fight and we were passionate in the fight and that is what we demand from our players. It was very good and we can take this into next week [against Fulham]."
