A drone strike near the Syrian-Iraqi border has reportedly killed five fighters affiliated with pro-Iranian forces, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
According to a report by The Times of Israel, the incident occurred on Sunday in Syria's eastern Deir Ezzor province, an area where Iran has established a significant military presence over the years.
The SOHR, a Britain-based war monitor, reported that the attack targeted a military vehicle carrying the fighters, although the identity of the drone operator remains unknown.
The SOHR detailed that several other fighters were injured in the strike, with some sustaining severe wounds. The province of Deir Ezzor, which is of strategic importance due to its proximity to the border and its oil-rich resources, has often been the site of military confrontations involving various factions, including Iranian-backed groups, Syrian government forces, and international actors like the United States and Israel.
Although it is not yet confirmed who conducted the strike, both Israel and the United States have previously carried out operations against Iranian-linked targets in the region. Israel, which views Iran's presence in Syria as a direct threat, has frequently launched airstrikes aimed at disrupting Iranian supply lines and preventing the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah and other militant groups. Meanwhile, the U.S. military has also conducted strikes against Iranian-aligned militias in response to attacks on American forces and their allies.
