UK High Commissioner Assures Safety of Nigerians After Anti-Immigration Riots

(The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery)

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has reassured Nigerians living in the UK of their safety after recent anti-immigration riots.

According to a report by Channels Television, Montgomery made this statement on Wednesday during a meeting with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in Abuja.

He informed that twelve British towns experienced disturbances due to the riots.

The unrest began late last month, fueled by a misinformation campaign against immigrants.

This campaign caused anger following a stabbing incident that tragically claimed the lives of three young girls, aged between six and nine, in Southport, northern England.

The riots were a direct response to the tragic knife attack.

According to videos shared on social media, large groups of rioters attempted to hijack cars driven by suspected immigrants. Other groups targeted a hotel in Rotherham that housed asylum seekers.

Montgomery stated that over 400 people have been arrested in connection with the riots.

In response to the situation, 60 special courts, involving the UK police and legal officials, have been established to address the issue.

He assured the head of NiDCOM that the UK authorities are handling the situation effectively.
