According to a report on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced plans to establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the killings and property damage during recent violent protests in the state.

Governor Yusuf expressed regret over the loss of lives and property caused by the nationwide hunger protests and rejected any association with protesters carrying Russian flags.

Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Governor's spokesperson, informed journalists on Monday that the Governor has finalized plans to set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to examine the vandalism, injuries, and tragic loss of life from the protests.

Bature stated, "The governor has conveyed deep regret regarding the disturbances caused by certain unpatriotic individuals driven by self-interest. He has reiterated a firm commitment that anyone attempting to destabilize Kano State will face severe legal consequences."

He added that normalcy is gradually returning to the state as the government closely monitors the situation. The government is also taking steps to ensure justice for victims and has announced several initiatives, including the prosecution of over 600 individuals suspected of orchestrating the unrest, starting today.

Furthermore, the governor has ordered the reopening of entrepreneurship and skills acquisition centers to promote self-reliance among the youth. The Kiru Reformatory Institute has been renovated and will soon accept youths affected by substance abuse, providing essential support and rehabilitation services.

The government urges Kano residents to actively participate in providing information to the forthcoming Commission of Inquiry and remains committed to protecting the lives and property of its citizens. It also clarifies that it has no connection with any protesters, including those carrying the Russian flag.
