Now that July has ended and we are seven months into 2024, it is time to review the past months in movies as we at Torizone list our favourite films and series released in 2024 so far.
From the large turnout in cinemas, the number of watches on streaming platforms, and the number of conversations on the internet about these movies and series, here are the top ten best films and series released in 2024.
House of Ga'a
Having been the most expected movie to drop on Netflix in July, the "House of Ga'a" was a fresh take on a part of Nigerian history as it retold the tale of Bashorun Ga'a, a powerful kingmaker in the 18th century Oyo Empire whose life came crumbling down by the hands of his family.
Lakatabu
Lakatabu earned its place as one of the best-selling movies in the Nigerian Box office in 2024; the film earned a total of ₦64.8 million across Nigerian cinemas. Odunlade Adekola's "Lakatabu" follows a fearful man with extraterrestrial powers who chooses to live as a criminal, instilling fear in the hearts of any who hears his name.
Funmilayo Ransome Kuti
Before being put on the streaming platform (Prime Videos), the "Funmilayo Ransome Kuti" movie was released in cinemas across the country, with many people eager to watch the story of the famous activist who was also the mother of the legendary singer, Fela Kuti. Before her death, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti stood up to her adversaries, showing courage, strength and resilience against the face of patriarchy. The movie recorded almost ₦47 million at the box office between May 17 and May 23.
Beast of Two Worlds
"Beast of Two Worlds" tells of a desperate monarch exiled due to his wife's inability to produce a son, an heir to the throne. He then takes a wife from another world, and the drama ensues. The movie grossed in Nigerian and US cinemas, making about $78,000 in the US cinemas and over ₦200 million in the Nigerian cinemas.
Ajosepo
"Ajosepo" is a family-centric film that will supposedly bring back the nostalgia of the hit Nollywood film Chief Daddy. "Ajosepo" focuses on the life of a young couple, Dapo and Tani, while they prepare for their wedding. The chaos unravels when the families involved arrive and display their true natures, which may jeopardise the wedding plans. The movie recorded over ₦177 million at the box office.
Muri & Ko
"Muri & Ko" recorded many people at the cinemas when it was released in June 2024. However, Nigerians seem to have hacked the comedy genre in the Nollywood industry, "Muri & Ko" was a breath of fresh air in Nigerian cinemas as everyone spoke of the movie's excellent production and the stars who played their roles well. "Muri & Ko" depicted the chaos that occurred after a street thug mistakenly kidnapped a child after stealing a car. The family of the child organised a search party for the child, and Muri faced a challenge: release the child to the parents or suffer the consequences.
Criminal
A first-of-its-kind movie by Dolapo Adigun, Criminal told the story of a hostage situation in Nigeria. The film was revered for its unique take on telling a story in Nollywood and raked in over ₦4 million at the box office.
Onye Egwu
Onye Egwu by Uche Jombo was released on the streaming platform (Prime Video) and praised as an interesting take on the Nollywood industry. There aren't that many sports-themed Nollywood movies, and telling an incredible story of determination, hope and rebirth through this sports genre was appreciated by Nigerians. Directed by Uche Jombo and starring Zubby Michael, "Onye Egwu" is the story of a football star on the verge of losing his stardom due to a fatal injury and takes on a young athlete who dreams of becoming a footballer.
Meeting Funmi's Parents
"Meeting Funmi's Parents" focuses on Funmi, who travels to Nigeria with her fiance to visit her family. Her parents immediately reject their love, whereas her ex is hell-bent on getting her back despite her love for her American man. The movie did wonderfully in the cinemas, raking in ₦9.4 million on its opening weekend and ₦14 million in its first week.
Oloture: The Journey
"Oloture: The Journey" is one of the most anticipated series released in Nigeria this year. The series is an adaptation of its original movie, released in 2019. The series, just like the movie, was released on Netflix and had everyone on their seats to see the story of Oloture as she continues on a dangerous path as a journalist on the quest.
