Kalvin Phillips has reportedly informed Manchester City that he wants to leave the club permanently this summer, bringing an end to his disappointing spell at the Etihad, according to Sportskeeda. According to English journalist Pete O'Rourke, Phillips has told the club that he does not want to go out on loan again and instead wants to secure a permanent move away from Manchester City.
Phillips, who joined Manchester City from Leeds United in July 2022 for £43 million, has struggled to make an impact at the club. He has started just six games and scored one goal in 31 appearances across all competitions. The 28-year-old midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United, but failed to impress, leading to him being dropped from the team.
Manchester City are understood to be willing to sell Phillips for around £20 million, with Aston Villa and Everton reportedly interested in signing him. However, both clubs prefer a loan move, which Phillips is not interested in.
Phillips' decision to leave Manchester City comes as no surprise, given his limited playing time and struggles to adapt to Pep Guardiola's system. The midfielder has four years left on his contract at the Etihad, but it appears that his time at the club is coming to an end.
In a recent interview, Guardiola gave an update on Phillips' future, saying: "We'll see what happens with Phillips. He's training really well, he made a really good first half against Celtic. He came from an injury, that's why we didn't want to give him more minutes. But we'll see, he knows the situation."
Phillips' departure from Manchester City could be a blessing in disguise for the midfielder, who was once one of the most sought-after players in the Premier League. A fresh start at a new club could be just what he needs to revive his career.
