The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has denied claims that it withdrew from the coming EndBadGovernanceInNigeria national protest, calling the reports false, as reported by Newsmen
NLC President Joe Ajaero released a statement on Tuesday, July 23, stating that the NLC was not the organizer of the protest and thus could not withdraw from it.
Ajaero explained that the NLC's actions, including protests, are governed by internal mechanisms and leadership processes.
Despite not organizing the protest, the NLC expressed solidarity with Nigerians suffering from harsh economic conditions imposed by government policies.
The NLC urged President Bola Tinubu to engage with the protest leaders and address their demands.
They warned that it would be counterproductive for the government to respond with force.
The organization called on the government to listen to the people's grievances, stating that the people's voice should be heard.
The NLC's statement comes as a result of widespread public disappointment and a call for nationwide protests against poor governance and economic hardships.
The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest has gained traction among citizens frustrated with current policies.
While the NLC clarified its non-involvement in organizing the protest, it reaffirmed its support for Nigerians' right to express their issues.
"The truth is that the Nigeria Labour Congress cannot withdraw from a protest that it did not organise."
"Organised Labour is not oblivious of the dire living conditions Nigerians have been subjected to," NLC stated.
