DSS denies arresting Kano man for printing protest T-shirts

According to reports, the Department of State Services (DSS) has refuted claims that it arrested Bashir Abubakar, a Kano resident, for printing T-shirts emblazoned with '#EndBadGovernanceInNigeria' in connection with the planned nationwide protest.

The allegations surfaced after Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election and one of the organizers of the upcoming protest, posted on his official X handle on Monday.

Sowore claimed that Abubakar was detained by DSS operatives for producing the protest T-shirts, but was subsequently released on Monday following intervention by a legal team.

Sowore's post read, "The team of lawyers sent to the @OfficialDSSNG today secured the release of Bashir Abubakar from the DSS dungeon.

Bashir was the youth activist from Kano who was accused of producing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria T-shirts in Kano."

In response to these allegations, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya categorically denied any such arrest.

Afunanya stated, "It is not true," dismissing the claims as unfounded.

The DSS's denial comes amid heightened tensions leading up to the planned nationwide protest against alleged poor governance.

The protest, scheduled for August, aims to address widespread dissatisfaction with current governmental policies and practices.
