Military Takes Overpower In Egypt

On July 23, 1952, Colonel Gamal Abdal Nasser's Free Officers staged a military coup in Egypt, seizing control of the government. King Farouk, who received several criticisms for corruption and failures in the first Arab-Israeli war, was forced to give up power, and General Muhammad Naguib, a key leader of the coup, assumed power.

The new regime redistributed land, prosecuted corrupt politicians, and abolished the monarchy in 1953. Nasser soon ousted Naguib and became the Prime Minister in 1954. He ruled well and implemented a socialist constitution, establishing Egypt as a non-aligned state amidst Cold War tensions. Elected unopposed as the President in 1956, Nasser maintained his influence until his death in office from a heart attack in 1970.
