They are right to criticise: Mourinho refuses to back Southgate after EURO 2024 failure

Jose Mourinho has said the criticism directed towards England boss Gareth Southgate at EURO 2024 is justified.

Gareth Southgate has drawn endless criticism for England's performances at EURO 2024 despite the Three Lions making it to the final of the competition.

Southgate has been criticised for utilising negative tactics and setting up his team to avoid defeat, and not maximising the talent at his disposal.

England only really had one exceptional game, against the Netherlands, and even that required a late goal from Ollie Watkins to win it.

"The criticism is more than acceptable because when you look at France and especially England, they have the best players in the world.

"This means coaches have to be ready for criticism which is part of the job at the highest level."

Southgate's future with England remains uncertain with the manager expected to take some time before deciding on his next steps.

Meanwhile, the English FA have been urged to appoint Pep Guardiola if he becomes available.

England legend Teddy Sheringham made the appeal in an interview last week, calling the Manchester City boss the perfect replacement for Southgate.
