Man Utd handed Jarrad Branthwaite update as Everton reach transfer agreement

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United's pursuit of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has hit a setback, with reports indicating that Everton has rejected both of United's bids for the center-back this summer.

The latest offer from United amounted to £45 million plus an additional £5 million in add-ons, an increase from their initial bid of £43 million last month, which was also turned down.

United's interest in Branthwaite forms part of their strategy to acquire two center-backs during this transfer window. However, a new development could complicate matters for United as Aston Villa appears close to finalizing a £50 million deal for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, as per The Athletic. Once this transaction is completed, Everton may no longer feel compelled to sell Branthwaite.

The report suggests that Everton will entertain offers for Branthwaite only if a substantial bid is tabled, likely exceeding £75 million, though no exact figure has been specified. In addition to Branthwaite, United is exploring other defensive options, including Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt and Lille's Leny Yoro.

With the transfer window closing on September 2, time is running out for United to bolster their squad. It remains uncertain how many signings United will secure before the deadline as they continue their pursuit of defensive reinforcements.
