New Era in Nigerian Federalism: Historic Push for Seven New States in the National Assembly.

With the recent developments happening at the National Assembly, one of the most prominent issues on the table is the proposed creation of more states. At least seven new states were proposed, discussed, and have passed the first reading at the National Assembly - a significant feat in Nigeria's democratic record.

The agenda of state creation is not one that is new to the Nigerian political scene and it's citizenry, as several past democratic administrations have tried and failed. However, if this present administration succeeds, it would cement its status as the first civilian government to do so, as previous state creations were achieved through military decrees in the 1960's.

Here below is the list of the seven new states that have been proposed and passed it's first reading:

1. Oke-Ogun State: To be carved out of Oyo State and it consists of 12 local government areas namely: Olorunsogo, Irepo, Oorerelope, Ogbomosho North, Ogbomosho South, Saki-East, Saki-West, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Kajola, and Iseyin.

2. Etiti State: To be carved out of the five southeast states namely: Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, and Imo.

3. Ijebu State: To be carved out of Ogun State and it consists of nine local government areas altogether, namely: Ijebu East, Ijebu North-East, Ijebu Ode, Ikenne, Odogbolu, Ogun Waterside, Remo North, Sagamu, and parts of Abeokuta.

4. Ife-Ijesha State: To be carved out of Osun State and it consists of nine local government areas namely: Atakunmosa East, Atakunmosa West, Boluwaduro, Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North, Ife South, Ilesa East, and Ilesa West.

5. Adada State: To be created from Enugu North senatorial district and it consists of six local government areas namely: Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Udenu, Nsukka, Igga, and Uzo-Uwani, with Nsukka as the capital.

6. Orlu State: To be in the southeast region and will have 28 local government areas.

7. Anioma State: To be in the southeast region and will have nine local government areas.

Indeed, the proposal to create seven new states in Nigeria is a bold and ambitious step towards addressing historical demands for equitable representation and improved governance and should this initiative succeed, it will not only redefine the nation's administrative map but also solidify the current administration's legacy as a transformative force in Nigerian politics scene.

As the process progresses, the eyes of the nation and the world remains fixed on the National Assembly, hopeful for a future marked by enhanced unity and development.
