Marseille's new coach, Roberto De Zerbi, has hailed Mason Greenwood as a world-class player amidst negotiations for a transfer from Manchester United, according to Metro. Greenwood, currently on loan at Getafe, won't return to Manchester United's first team due to his past arrest and charges, which were dropped in February 2023.
De Zerbi's praise for Greenwood comes as Marseille leads the negotiations for the 22-year-old striker, with a £27m deal close to being agreed upon. Despite fan protests and a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign, Marseille remains keen on signing Greenwood, who has impressed during his loan spell at Getafe.
De Zerbi's comments suggest a fatherly approach to managing players, promising to protect and defend Greenwood like a son if he joins. "He is a champion, an international-level player," De Zerbi said at his debut press conference as Marseille's new head coach. "I don't know his past, I don't know exactly what happened. I don't like to interfere in the private lives of players. The only thing I can say is that when a player signs for the club where I work, I consider him as my child. I protect him through thick and thin, even if I can pull his ear in private, I will defend him publicly. My players are like my sons."
