Residents of two local government areas in Delta State were deeply troubled by a woman in her 30s who took her own life by jumping from the Ekpan overpass. According to Newsmen on Sunday morning, some people suggested that it was a mental health issues or depression drove her to this desperate act, while others speculated it may have involved spiritual factors.
Eyewitnesses initially thought the woman was filming a skit but were horrified to see her plummet backwards from the overpass, resulting in her death on the busy road below.
Concerned citizens have called on local and federal authorities to install protective barriers along the overpass to deter future such tragedies. Police confirmed the incident but said the body had already been removed by the time they arrived. Locals proposed banning pedestrians from using the overpass, arguing it is intended for vehicle traffic only, as a way to prevent copycat suicide attempts.
This tragedy came shortly after another reported suicide in Lagos, leading some to wonder if the two were connected in some way. Overall, the community expressed a deep sense of sorrow and questioned why bystanders did not intervene to try and save the woman.
According to Newsmen, A journalist in Warri, who did not want his name mentioned, said he was wondering why those under the flyover did not make any move to save the girl.
He said: "I was sad that those under the flyover were busy videoing and saying: 'she go soon jump oooo, she mean am, she wan die o'. They should have arranged for a Keke to rush to rescue her."
