JUST IN: Liberian President Boakai Storms Nigeria for ECOWAS Summit

President Joseph Boakai of Liberia is set to arrive in Abuja, Nigeria today to attend the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority and Heads of State and Government.

The President will be accompanied by his support staff, protocol, and assistants handling communications and media, security, and personal matters, a statement released on Saturday said.

Other members of the President's official delegation include Honorable Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Dean of the Cabinet; Honorable Boima S. Kamara, Minister of Finance; Honorable Amos Tweh, Managing Director, Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC); Honorable Morley Kamara, Economic Advisor to the President.

"While the President is away, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs and Chief of Staff, Sylvester M. Grigsby, will Chair the Cabinet and work in consultation with the President," the statement added.

The Liberian delegation is expected to return to the country on Monday, July 8, 2024.

This summit is one of the two summits that will be hosted in West Africa this weekend. The first is scheduled for Saturday in Niger between Sahel region military regime leaders, and the second is scheduled for Sunday in Nigeria with leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) bloc.

The summit in Niger's capital Niamey marks the first meeting between the military leaders of the new regional bloc, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), formed by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger in September. The formation of AES comes after the three countries left the ECOWAS bloc in January.
