Labour Union Warns Governors Against Undermining Minimum Wage Negotiations

The country's governors have been warned by organised labour not to follow bad advice that would cause widespread anger, suffering, and poverty. President Bola Tinubu is now reviewing the National Minimum Wage suggestions put forth by the Tripartite Committee, and the union has taken a stand in response. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) wanted N250,000, while the government and private sector offered N62,000 during the committee's last meeting.

In regard to the President's submission to the National Assembly, the labour centres will accept the decisions made by their separate bodies, according to Comrade Benson Upah, the NLC's Information Head, as reported by Vanguard. Strikes are a last option, as Upah stressed while ignoring immediate moves to go on strike. He asked for understanding because the president's decision was delayed due to holidays like Sallah and Democracy Day.

Upah cautioned that the labour movement's stance will be contingent upon the government's proposal before the National Assembly, pointing out that there is disagreement among government officials, particularly governors who assert they cannot afford to pay even N62,000 each. He made it clear that certain governors are speaking out against the new minimum wage and urged them to change their minds so that the nation doesn't fall into poverty.
