WAEC to Gradually Eliminate Use of Papers in Examinations

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) in Nigeria has announced that it will eventually stop using paper exams.

After observing the administration of the present West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Abeokuta, Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of National Office, revealed this on Thursday.

In order to conduct the WASSCE in the future, the head of WAEC, together with Mrs. Mariam Oloko, Permanent Secretary of the Ogun Ministry of Education, indicated that WAEC planned to distribute electronic gadgets to various approved test centers around the nation.

He claimed that the implementation of the devices would identify any kind of malpractice at the centers and do away with the current practice of registering candidates on paper.

We are proposing that, moving forward, schools with access to computer-based testing facilities will administer the exam via computer, whereas schools without such resources will use pen and paper.

We'll collaborate with the Ministry of Education to develop a schedule for this. We'll roll it out when the time is right," he declared.

Dangut clarified that the evaluation was appropriate, pointing out that both the students and the schools had done a good job of preparing for it.

But he also said that larger laboratories that could accommodate students and have enough equipment were a must for schools.

He claims that more than 1.8 million applicants nationwide are taking the exams.

Oloko stated that the government of Governor Dapo Abiodun has already started the process of registering students online for both public and private schools in the state.

In order to better educate educators and pupils, the permanent secretary promised that information and communication technology (ICT) and other facilities would be upgraded continuously in public schools.
