Kobbie Mainoo has recently admitted that he considered playing for the Black Stars of Ghana, his ancestral homeland, before ultimately choosing to represent England.

Born and raised in England to Ghanaian parents, the Manchester United midfielder who grew up in a culturally rich environment, was eligible to represent the Three Lions or Black Stars at the international level.

According to Complete Sports, Mainoo has affirmed his commitment to England after making his competitive debut for the Three Lions in the ongoing European Championship.

"I'm proud of my Ghanaian heritage but it has always been a dream to play for England. I'm happy to be here. I considered it, but I want to play for England."

Mainoo came on in the second half against Serbia as England kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a win.

Why Mainoo chose England over Ghana

Meanwhile, Mainoo's decision to represent England at international level was influenced by several factors, including his development within the English football system.

The opportunities provided by the England national teams, and the midfielder's aspirations to compete at the highest levels of international football compelled him to snub the Black Stars for the Three Lions.

Representing Ghana would have connected Mainoo more closely with his heritage but the Manchester United rising star prefers to forge his path with England where he believes he stands a better chance of winning major international titles.
