78-year-old Irini Katsoturchi is the only resident of the Greek island of Kinaros in the Aegean Sea.
The woman assures that she is not afraid of living alone, according to the Greek Reporter.
Kyra Irini, or Mrs Irini, has been living alone on the island since her husband's death in 2013. She was raised on Kinaros, after her wedding she lived on the nearby island of Kalymnos, and the family later emigrated to Australia. After returning to the country, the couple decided to settle permanently in Kinaros.
"Life on Kinaros is not easy for a single old woman," emphasises Greek Reporter.
In winter, her only contact with the outside world is a boat with supplies that arrives once a week. The postman also arrives every two weeks. In summer, more boats arrive at the shore, and their passengers exchange a few words with the resident.
Irini is accompanied by her dog Siva and several chickens. Sheep and goats also live freely on the island.
The website reports that in 2020, Mrs Irini "disappeared from the radar" for several days, which put the Air Force and Coast Guard on their feet. Contact with the woman was impossible due to a failure and lack of electricity on the island. However, the Greek woman was located by a helicopter that delivered her supplies.
Despite living alone, the woman was vaccinated against COVID-19, the website notes.
In 2020, the island and its only inhabitant were visited by Greek president, Katerina Sakielaropulu.
