The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced today on their social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), the arrest of three individuals by the Benin Zonal Command for suspected naira mutilation and abuse.
The suspects, identified as Stanley Ogbolu, 35, Odiaka Sorwu, 42, and Kelvin Anyakwu, 42, were apprehended in Asaba, Delta State, during a burial ceremony where they were allegedly spraying naira notes on a celebrant. The arrest followed credible intelligence regarding their involvement in naira abuse.
The EFCC stated that the suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
This incident has sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with many users questioning the EFCC's priorities. Critics pointed out the agency's focus on minor offenses while allegedly neglecting to pursue high-profile cases involving prominent politicians.
One user, @santiMandizer, commented, "You keep showing us pictures of people you caught, but failed to bring out the former governor of Kogi state. Is it because those you caught aren't politicians? This is a dirty game."
Another user, @monica, added, "Please go out there and catch criminals stealing with pen and paper and leave innocent people alone."
@MrEazy expressed frustration, "God, what happened to Nigeria? People stealing billions are nowhere to be found while those committing petty crimes are easily grabbed."
@Bossphotography remarked, "The former governor of Kogi state is still walking free in Nigeria."
