Former Senator Shehu Sani has publicly expressed his gratitude to General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who became Nigeria's Head of State in 1998. In a video shared on YouTube by Channels TV, Sani revealed that he and many others, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, journalists, and activists, were serving long prison sentences for fighting for democracy.
Sani stated that in 1995, a military tribunal sentenced them to life imprisonment for treason. He believed they would spend the rest of their lives in prison, but thanks to General Abdulsalami's intervention, they were eventually set free.
Sani expressed his gratitude, saying: "I was one of those sentenced to life imprisonment for treason along with former President Obasanjo, many journalists, activists, and those who were at the forefront of the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. For those of us who were in prison, we thought we would spend the rest of our lives in prison when a military tribunal in 1995 found us guilty and sentenced us to life in imprisonment."
