Maritime Workers Vow to Join Nationwide Strike on Monday

According to reports, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced its commitment to participate in the indefinite nationwide strike, as directed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), starting Monday.

The decision is a response to the Federal Government's failure to finalize a new national minimum wage and to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Adewale Adeyanju, President General of MWUN, emphasized the urgency and necessity of the strike.

Adeyanju directed all members of the union, which includes workers at ports, jetties, terminals, and oil and gas platforms nationwide, to comply fully with the strike directive.

He further noted that the notice serves as an alert to all stakeholders in the maritime sector.

The nationwide strike is a reaction to the Federal Government's refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

On Friday, members of organized labor, including the NLC and TUC, declared the strike due to the government's inaction on these critical issues.

Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, announced the strike during a press conference at the Labour House in Abuja.

He expressed deep concern and disappointment over the government's failure to finalize and pass into law a new National Minimum Wage Act and to address the increase in electricity tariffs, which have been a significant burden on Nigerians.

The new electricity tariff stands at N65/kWh, a rate that many Nigerians find unsustainable given the current economic conditions.

Ajaero, reading from a jointly prepared statement with his TUC counterpart, Festus Osifo, indicated that the strike would commence at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

The strike is expected to affect various sectors across the country, with the maritime sector being a significant player due to its critical role in trade and logistics.
