David Beckham has admitted that he doesn't know how he and wife Victoria Beckham have "got through the last 27 years" after experiencing "ups and downs".

Former professional footballer David, now 49, and the fashion designer, now 50, began their high-profile romance back in 1997. The couple got married two years later and they now have four children together.

The pair both feature in the Netflix docuseries Beckham. David, who is the subject of the project, has suggested that he gets "emotional" watching scenes from the four-part series, whilst reflecting on the last few decades.

Beckham, which was released on the streaming platform in October last year, follows his "meteoric rise from humble beginnings to global football stardom". It also explores his relationship with Victoria, including the early stages of their romance and how they dealt with 'marriage troubles'.

David has since reflected on his marriage following the release of the docuseries in an upcoming episode of the SmartLess podcast. It's reported that he suggests that despite "up and downs," he's grateful they are still together as they approach their silver wedding anniversary in July.

He says: "That's one of the things we both, me and Victoria, probably both get emotional about, and after watching the documentary after everything was over and we watched it finally, that's the one thing that we looked at each other and was like 'I don't know how we got through the last 27 years,' but we did and we have an amazing family, amazing business and we're happy."

David adds: "And yeah, of course, when you're with someone for that amount of time, of course you have your ups and downs, everybody knows that and at the end of the day we were lucky because we had each other at those moments."

He said that even when the couple were "going through difficult times," they had each other "to feed off". He described that as the "best part" and added that their responsibilities changed when they became parents.

Following its release last year, Beckham left fans gobsmacked over its endless revelations and bombshells - from the David's grilling on past infidelity rumours to a terrifying kidnap incident.

David and Victoria's relationship struggled after allegations surfaced in 2004

Heartbreakingly, David and Victoria also spoke about how their marriage came close to breaking down, with Posh saying tearfully, "We were against each other." Their Netflix series showed newspapers on screen covering the 2004 allegations made by his former assistant Rebecca Loos. The PA for the footballer claimed she had an affair with Beckham whilst he was playing for Real Madrid. Other women made other allegations too, all of which Beckham described as "ludicrous" at the time.

In the documentary, director Fisher Stevens asked David: "Multiple tabloid stories broke, and how did you deal with that?" David replied: "There were some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with. It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage."

Stevens then asked former Spice Girl Victoria, 49, if that was the hardest time in their marriage. She replied: "100 percent. It was the hardest period for us. Because it felt like the world was against us. And here's the thing; we were against each other, if I'm being completely honest. You know, up until Madrid sometimes it felt like us against everybody else. But we were together. We were connected. We had each other.

"But when we were in Spain, it didn't really feel that we had each other either. And that's sad. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me."

David also opened up about having to be "held back" from attacking Sir Alex Ferguson when he was hit by a flying football boot in 2003. The famous incident saw Beckham end up with a cut above his eye after Manchester United boss Sir Alex kicked the book across the dressing room in fury after defeat against Arsenal in 2003. It happened as the relationship between Sir Alex and David soured and photos afterwards showed Beckham with butterfly stitches.

He said: "From what I remember we lost against Arsenal. We walked into the changing room and the boss is fuming, I can see by his face. And when you see the boss' face like that you don't want to be anywhere near him."
