EFCC warns banks against leaking probe details

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, urged bank compliance officers nationwide to refrain from unauthorized disclosure of EFCC investigation details and requests to customers.

According to report, Olukoyede, speaking through EFCC's Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, in Ibadan, Oyo State, criticized the support fraudsters receive from Nigeria's banking sector, highlighting the challenges it poses to the commission.

During a meeting with bank compliance officers in Oyo State, facilitated by the Acting Zonal Director of the Ibadan Zonal Command, Hauwa Ringim, Olukoyede emphasized the detrimental impact of disclosing information on EFCC's investigation activities, citing how it hampers financial crime investigations and leads to delays in corruption cases reaching the court.

Olukoyede also emphasized the importance of responding to EFCC letters with certified true copies of transaction instruments to expedite investigations.

He specifically highlighted the need to cease illegal trading in naira with Point-of-Sale operators. Olukoyede pointed out the unfairness of limited bank withdrawals for Nigerians contrasted with large sums handled by POS operators, stressing the need to address this issue. He reassured compliance officers of the EFCC's continuous support, acknowledging their significance as key allies in combating economic and financial crimes.
