A 24-year-old mother, identified as Sofia Nkwor, has explained why she dumped her 13-month-old baby in a well on April 26, 2024 at Araya community, Isoko South council area of Delta State, saying she regretted her action.

The suspect, who was paraded by the Nigeria Police, Delta State Command, is a native of Ushie in Ndokwa east of the state and former bar attendant. She was paraded alongside 14 other criminals by the state Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda.

While speaking, Sofia said being an orphan, she had nobody to care for her after the boyfriend who impregnated her denied ownership of the baby.

"The father rejected the baby, I stay with my grandma. She rejected me and the baby.

"I regret my actions, I feel bad. I was in a bad mood  the time I did it. I have no helper. It is only me taking care of the baby, doing everything. I am tired," she explained.

The Police Commissioner said children who were playing  around  had  discovered the abandoned child floating on the well  and subsequently reported the matter to the local vigilante who alerted the police.

Meanwhile, one 45 years old Chiemenam Adigwe, a native of Akpo community in Aguata  local government area of Anambra State,  who was arrested with 100 fake bottles of Gordons, Chelsea, Eagle Schnapps and McDowell's was also paraded.

According to the Commissioner,  the suspect was arrested in the creek town of Bomadi, adding that he mixed ethanol with water and added flavor to it to produce the products.

"He then package these fake drinks in empty bottles of Gordons, Chelsea, and McDowell's which he usually buys from Onitsha.

"Suspect also stated that when he supplies to his customers, he tells them he usually order the drinks from Onitsha. Suspect is in custody and investigation is ongoing," he said.
