DSTV Tariff Increase: Lawyer to Post Restraining Order at MultiChoice Office.

According to reports, The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja has directed that its interim order, which prevents MultiChoice Nigeria Limited from raising DSTV tariffs, be posted at the company's "corporate headquarters or any known addresses of MultiChoice Nigeria Limited's branches across Nigeria."

The tribunal chairman, Saratu Shafii, in the order dated April 29, 2024, stated that the document must also be sent to MultiChoice's known email address, social media accounts, and any other publicly accessible communication platforms associated with MultiChoice.

The interim order preventing MultiChoice from raising its tariff was granted in favor of Festus Onifade, a lawyer based in Abuja, who is contesting MultiChoice's recent decision to increase the tariffs for its DStv and GOtv packages starting May 1.

In his lawsuit, referenced CCPT/OP/2/2024, Onifade named MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission as defendants.

He sought "an order of interim injunction from this honorable tribunal restraining the 1st defendant, whether by themselves, their associates, or assigns, from implementing the impending price increase scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2024, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice."

The order prohibits the 1st defendant from taking any actions that might harm the rights of the claimant and other consumers in connection with the case, pending the hearing and decision on the Motion on Notice."

On Monday, April 29, the tribunal issued an order preventing MultiChoice from implementing the scheduled tariff and product price increases set to take effect on May 1.
