According to a report on Monday, April, 29, 2024, the National Association of Nigerian Students, has issued a resolute call to action in response to the ongoing fuel scarcity plaguing the country, declaring that students "cannot afford to suffer any longer under ineffective leadership." In a statement released by the association's Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, NANS expressed deep frustration and concern over the dire consequences of the fuel crisis, which has left citizens, including students, feeling frustrated and helpless.
Despite assurances from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) that logistical issues causing the fuel shortages had been addressed, queues at filling stations persist, with some stations selling fuel at exorbitant prices ranging between N700 and N800 per liter.
This situation has created an opportunity for black marketers to exploit desperate Nigerians, selling fuel for even higher prices.
Akinteye emphasized the severe impact of the fuel crisis on students, citing increased petrol pump prices, transport fare hikes, and unreliable access to essential services like electricity. He demanded immediate action from the NNPCL to resolve the crisis and restore stability to the nation.
Furthermore, Akinteye called for the resignation or removal of Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of NNPCL, if he fails to address the fuel crisis decisively.
"Nigerian students cannot afford to suffer any longer under ineffective leadership," declared Akinteye. "If the NNPCL fails to act swiftly and decisively to address the fuel crisis, Nigerian students are prepared to take mass action."
