1. The Mariana Trench
Located in the western Pacific Ocean, is the deepest part of the world's oceans with a depth of 36,070 feet (10,994 meters). It is located east of the Mariana Islands and stretches for more than 1,500 miles. The trench was formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Mariana Plate.
2. The Tonga Trench
Located in the South Pacific Ocean, has a depth of 35,702 feet (10,882 meters). It is located east of the Tonga Islands and stretches for more than 1,000 miles. The trench was formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Australian Plate.
3. The Kermadec Trench
located in the South Pacific Ocean, has a depth of 34,757 feet (10,047 meters). It is located east of the Kermadec Islands and stretches for more than 600 miles. The trench was formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Australian Plate.
4. The Philippine Trench
located in the western Pacific Ocean, has a depth of 34,441 feet (10,497 meters). It is located east of the Philippines and stretches for more than 1,500 miles. The trench was formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Philippine Sea Plate.
5. The South Sandwich Trench
located in the southern Atlantic Ocean, has a depth of 27,460 feet (8,382 meters). It is located east of the South Sandwich Islands and stretches for more than 600 miles. The trench was formed by the subduction of the South American Plate under the Sandwich Plate.
The depths of these trenches are so deep that it's difficult for scientists to collect data from the bottom, as the pressure is more than 8 tons per square inch. The temperature is also extremely cold, often below freezing. Despite these challenges, scientists have been able to study the trenches and have discovered new species of marine life living in these extreme environments.
