Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo has apologised for his celebration after scoring a screamer against Liverpool.

The 18-year-old sensation sent Old Trafford into raptures when he gave the Red Devils a 2-1 lead over their rivals before the game eventually finished 2-2. Mainoo received the ball from team-mate Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the 67th minute before opening his body up and curling the ball into the top right-hand corner from just inside the box.

His sublime finish came despite a difficult start for United, having been dominated by Liverpool and headed into half-time 1-0 down. But Erik ten Hag's side came out of the tunnel with a point to prove as Bruno Fernandes sparked the comeback, before Mainoo brought Old Trafford to its feet with his first goal at the ground.

Such was the beauty of Mainoo's strike that the recent England international began celebrating before it even went in. And he apologised for not containing his excitement in his post-match interview, having gone on to salute the Old Trafford faithful and blown kisses.

Mainoo apologetically said via the Mirror: "Yeah, it felt good so I got ahead of myself. Sorry."

He added: "Unbelievable feeling, first professional goal at Old Trafford and to do it in this fixture is also amazing. At the end of the day, we don't walk away with the three points so I can't be too happy."

Mohamed Salah's late penalty snatched a draw for Liverpool, leaving United to run their own missed opportunities. It was Wan-Bissaka's foul on Harvey Elliott in the box that gave Salah the chance to level the score late on.

The 18-year-old apologised unnecessarily

Mainoo was dissatisfied with the end result despite stealing a point off title-hopefuls Liverpool, pointing out that small errors are costing the side. United dropped points from a winning position for the third game in a row.

He said: "Disappointed [with only a point], to be honest, because I feel like in the second half we performed really well. We picked it up and the lads worked really, really hard. It was minor mistakes that in the end were major. Need ironing out and we can win the game."
