Jurgen Klopp: Shearer suggests replacement for outgoing Liverpool manager

The Premier League's record goalscorer has given his opinion on the Reds' next managerial appointment.

Premier League Hall of Fame inductee Alan Shearer has revealed who should be Jurgen Klopp's replacement at Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp to leave Liverpool after nine years

The German, in January, divulged his intention to leave the club he joined in 2015 at the end of the 2023-24 season. Klopp has won it all on Merseyside, remarkably claiming the club's sixth European Cup in 2019 and an unprecedented Premier League title the following year.

Rumours have understandably swirled since the 56-year-old's announcement, with Xabi Alonso, Roberto De Zerbi, and Thomas Frank linked with the Liverpool role. The media favourite is the erstwhile Reds midfielder, who was on the side that triumphed against AC Milan in Istanbul in 2006, even if Bayern Munich are confident about landing the Bayer Leverkusen boss.

What Shearer said about Klopp's possible replacement

Shearer has echoed those thoughts in wanting Alonso back at Anfield in a Q&A on The Athletic.

"The intriguing thing is Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona are all looking for a new manager - and I don't think they're the only big jobs that will become available this summer," replied the 1995 Premier League winner to a question from an Athletic reader.

"With the job that Xabi Alonso is doing this season at Bayer Leverkusen, he'll have a pick of jobs if he wants them. That's the obvious link that loads of people have already made, given Alonso played for Liverpool.

Alonso has had a storming season with Leverkusen, who remain undefeated in all competitions this term and are in with a shout of ending this season with three titles. The Spaniard's team lead the way in the Bundesliga, are on course for a possible Europa League final with Liverpool and are in the semi-final of the DFB-Pokal.

Shearer discussed other topics in the Q&A session, strikingly touching on England's Euro 2024 campaign and Marcus Rashford's possible role.
