Ballon d'Or winner advises Alonso against Liverpool Move

Alonso has impressed this season, with his Bayer Leverkusen ten points clear of Bayern Munich and on track for a first-ever German title with eight games remaining this season.

German football legend Lothar Matthäus believes a summer switch to Liverpool would not be the best fit for Bayer Leverkusen's impressive coach, Xabi Alonso.

Alonso has the unbeaten side 10 points clear of Bayern Munich and on track for a first-ever German title with eight games remaining this season.

Bayer Leverkusen are on a tear under Xabi Alonso's leadership. They boast an incredible record of 34 wins and just 4 draws in 38 games so far this season.

This dominant form extends to cup competitions, with Leverkusen reaching the final four of the German Cup and the quarter-finals of the Europa League. With these achievements, Alonso has his sights set on an unlikely, but very possible, treble for the club.

Legend Matthäus advises Alonso against Liverpool Move

The 42-year-old Alonso has emerged as a managerial hot property after guiding Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga.

Unsurprisingly, this has sparked transfer rumors linking him with a return to former clubs Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich after Klopp announced in January that he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season after nine years at the Reds.

However, 63-year-old Matthäus suggests Alonso might be better served staying put and continuing his impressive work at Leverkusen.

In an interview with AFP, Matthäus added that Klopp presents a unique challenge that he has built a legacy of success at Liverpool, and any incoming manager will need to find their own way to build on that.

"Liverpool is not the right option for Xabi Alonso after this season. He has better options. Alonso would have to build a new team for the future, with new players.

"To coach at Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp is not easy because Jurgen is a hero, he's fantastic. What he was doing is great and what could you do that was much better?
