Following the departure of Jose Peseiro, Super Eagles Technical Director Augustine Owen Eguavoen has stepped into the coaching role for the Nigerian football team.
Peseiro, 63, assumed the position as head coach of the Super Eagles after Nigeria's exit from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cameroon. He took office in May 2022, leading Nigeria to the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast.
Despite a valiant effort, Peseiro's team fell short in the final, with Sebastien Haller's goal sealing the fate of the exhausted Super Eagles.
The contract of the former Porto manager concluded in February, prompting his departure from the Super Eagles, despite agreeing to a pay cut.
Soccernet reports that Augustine Eguavoen, the team's technical director, will assume the role of interim manager for the three-time AFCON winners until a permanent solution is found.
Eguavoen, a former Super Eagles right-wing back, previously took charge of the Nigerian team during the AFCON 2021 tournament in Cameroon, following the departure of former coach Gernot Rohr.
