This article celebrates the top 5 African players who have left an indelible mark on the sport, showcasing their unique talents and unforgettable achievements.
Nwankwo Kanu (Nigeria)
The word "Nwankwo" means "baby born in the market". You can draw your conclusions. "Baby" grew to 197 centimeters and built a wonderful football career. Kanu played 18 seasons in Europe: he started at Ajax, with whom he won the Champions League, then moved to Inter, where he played little, but in the Foggy Albion reasserted himself at the top of his voice, especially playing under Arsene Wenger in London's Arsenal. Nwankwo has twice been voted Africa's best footballer (1996 and 1999) and has won more trophies than any other African player in his playing career. Five years ago, Kanu played his last match for Portsmouth and has concentrated on his charity work: he is a profoundly religious man and is the founder of the Kanu Heart Foundation, which helps children with heart disease across Africa.
Roger Milla (Cameroon)
The striker, Milla, is a man of no great destiny. Take at least the fact that he played for the Cameroon national team for more than twenty years, played in three championships, and at the Mundial-1994 went to the 42-year-old age, which did not prevent him there to distinguishing himself in a duel with the Russian national team and become the oldest author of a goal in the final stages of the World Cup. This record threatens to be "eternal": at the age of 42, to go to the World Cup is a feat, but to score there ... It is surprising how long Roger played at a high level, so two awards for the best footballer in Africa he received with a difference of 14 years: in 1976 and 1990.
Didier Drogba (Côte d'Ivoire)
The last three players don't need any explanation - you know them all well. The famous Chief is one of the best forwards of the beginning of the 21st century. He finally reached the Champions Cup at Stamford Bridge, where he returned the season before last to become the English champion again. Didier is an example of a powerful striker. Not without reason, many defenders have called him the most unpleasant opponent in his career.
Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon)
Eto'o is the only African to have won the Champions League three times, even with two different teams. Samuel scored wherever he played, be it Barcelona, Anzhi, Inter or Antalyaspor. Four times, like Yaya Toure, he was voted the best African footballer of the year.
Yaya Toure (Côte d'Ivoire)
It's hard to believe it, but the best footballer in Africa in recent years, star of Manchester City and APL, played for Metalurh Donetsk in the early noughties. And then, in a couple of sharp jumps, reached Barcelona, spending a season at Olympiacos and Monaco. Yaya won seven trophies with the Catalans but was sold to Manchester City as Guardiola decided to trust Busquets. Well, Yaya and Pep have been reunited this summer. How will the second round of their cooperation turn out?
