Former member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Jesutega Onokpasa, criticized Professor Usman Yusuf for attributing Nigeria's hardship and food scarcity to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Onokpasa disputed Yusuf's assertion, stating that the country does not lack food but rather lacks the money to purchase it. He accused Yusuf of engaging in gaslighting and insinuating calls for insurrection during his remarks.
According to Onokpasa, the root cause of Nigeria's food scarcity is not an actual shortage of food but rather the widespread inability of citizens to afford it due to financial constraints. He emphasized that the issue lies in the lack of purchasing power among the populace rather than insufficient food production or availability within the country.
During his critique of Yusuf's statements, Onokpasa expressed disappointment with Yusuf's attempt to shift blame onto President Tinubu and his apparent disregard for the complexities of Nigeria's socioeconomic challenges. He highlighted the dangers of inciting unrest and inflaming tensions by making provocative statements about regional disparities and political leadership. He cautioned against rhetoric that could exacerbate existing tensions and called for a more constructive approach to addressing Nigeria's socioeconomic challenges.
He said, "Our problem is not even lack of food, we don't, even you Stephen should know, that we don't, we do not have lack of food - we are not lacking food in this country, it is the money to buy the food. Excuse me, you gave him opportunity to gaslight, to basically - he was even on the verge of calling for insurrection, that's what he was doing, and and I was so ashamed of... Beautiful, he was talking about Northern Nigeria started - Northern Nigeria this, as if he was the spokesman of the Sultan..."
