Russian opposition leader and President Vladimir Putin's critic, Alexei Navalny, on Friday died at the Arctic prison colony where he was serving a 19-year jail term.
The Russian Federal Penitentiary Service disclosed this in a statement on its official website, according to Reuters.
"Navalny felt bad after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness. Medical staff arrived immediately, and an ambulance team was called.
"Resuscitation measures were carried out which did not yield positive results. Paramedics confirmed the death of the convict. The causes of death are being established," the statement said.
Navalny, who was born in June 1976, had organised anti-government demonstrations and ran for office to advocate reforms against corruption in Russia.
