Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has finally addressed reports of online threats issued against him following his heroics in the 2023 AFCON match against South Africa.
Speaking to BluePrint, Nwabali said "I must go back to my club," clarifying his commitment to Chippa United, the South African club he joined in October 2022.
The shot-stopper downplayed the threats, stating, "This is football," highlighting the competitive nature of the sport and suggesting such reactions, though unwelcome, are not entirely unexpected.
Nwabali further reminded critics that South Africa also eliminated other teams during their journey in the AFCON, so for that reason he shouldn't be threatened.
His final words, "I must go back to my club because they own me," reiterated his professional responsibility and contractual commitment to Chippa United despite the negative reactions and threats.
Nwabali's measured response sets a positive example for athletes facing online abuse.
His focus on professionalism and contractual responsibility, while acknowledging the situation, showcases the maturity and composure required to navigate such incidence.
