Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has spoken about the removal of fuel subsidy by the administration of TInubu.
In a video recently shared on YouTube by Sahara TV, Falana drew attention to a precedent during the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha's era. He recalled that under Abacha, despite his controversial leadership, a system called PTF (Petroleum Trust Fund) was established to manage and utilize funds generated from the removal of fuel subsidy for the development and maintenance of critical infrastructure in the country
Falana expressed concern over the current situation, stating that the public was initially informed that the funds generated from the removal of subsidy would be channeled to address issues like unemployment, insecurity, and food crises. He emphasized the need for citizens to demand transparency and accountability in ensuring that the benefits promised from the removal of fuel subsidy are effectively utilized for the betterment of the country
In Falana's words: "When we had a situation like this under Abacha, as bad as he was, he set up PTF. The gains of fuel subsidy then were kept and used to address the infrastructural crisis in the country. So this time around we are demanding for our rights because what they told us is that subsidy is gone and the gains of subsidy will be used to address problems of employment, insecurity, food crisis, and so on".
