Dalhatu Sarki Tafida, a former Senate Majority leader and ex-ambassador to the UK, has alleged that Obasanjo considered a third term during his presidency and he was one of the people who Obasanjo spoke to about it.

In an interview with Newsmen, Tafida alleged that Obasanjo called him and some other high-ranking lawmakers to a meeting at night where they spoke about his (Obasanjo's) third-term ambition. He said during the meeting, he told Obasanjo that the governors who professed support for his ambition were merely deceiving him.

In Tafida's words: "There was a night Obasanjo called us about his third-term, I, the Senate President and Mantu and the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and House leader. He said he was traveling out and he would be back in three days. I said you are leaving but all those Governors who told you they are with you are not. He tried to know what was actually happening. I said you should really try to find out the governors are doing nothing, they are only deceiving you. You know we are all equal in that chamber, anybody can tell anybody anything. That night he could not travel because he wanted to make arrangements to invite the governor to be seen by the Chief of Staff, Mohammed".
