Surprisingly, football powerhouses are making spectacular exits from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) competition due to unforeseen obstacles. Notably, the Black Antelopes of Angola and the Nigerian Super Eagles squared off in a quarterfinal match on Friday, February 2nd. The Nigerian team prevailed, earning a desired trip to the semi-final stage.
Angola's head coach, Pedro Goncalves, showed excellent sportsmanship following his team's loss. Goncalves was kind enough to congratulate the Nigerian team on their victory and to acknowledge that they had advanced to the tournament's semifinals.
Reno Omokri, a well-known novelist and former assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan, responded to this remarkable show of sportsmanship by praising the Angolan team on his official Twitter page. Omokri praised Angola for their outstanding behavior off the field in addition to their on-court accomplishments.
"Angola won my respect and the admiration of others, but they lost the match yesterday," wrote Omokri in a tweet. I had no idea they were such kind individuals. They gave Nigeria props. Formally. On social media, there was no opposition. There was no violence among their supporters. Anti-Nigerian feelings were absent. Simply said, they moved on. What a wonderful and amazing race of people. I'm eager to travel to Angola because of their behavior. What other country in Africa, if any, would have acted in such a manner? Angola, may God bless you!"
Several Nigerians, besides Reno Omokri, have praised Angola's remarkable sportsmanship and tenacious character on various social media platforms.
